What is it?
We just left our favorite knitting shop with a very cool new sweater pattern and yarn so beautiful that it defies description. We weren't planning on starting on a new project today, but when inspiration strikes what can you do? You tell yourself you have no choice but to start right away. Every other priority is relegated to the proverbial back burner. We grab our favorite chair, flip on the lights and immediately start to cast on. But it seems there's a step we're skipping somewhere but the urge to see that beautiful new sweater completed pushes us on. Now, however, after we've spent countless hours completing our dream project we find that it doesn't fit. Oh no! Wait a minute, what was that step we skipped? Gauge, that's it. We forgot to make an accurate measurement of our gauge. And it was a fatal mistake. Correct assessment of our gauge is a necessary step to ensure that our finished project matches our pattern. How do we determine our gauge? We knit a swatch to simulate the fabric of our new sweater. Once complete, we lay the swatch on a flat surface and measure the number of stitches in four inches across the fabric and then measure the rows vertically across four inches. Now that we have determined our stitch gauge and row gauge we can compare them with the pattern. If we have more stitches per inch we'll have to do another swatch using larger diameter needles. If we have less stitches per inch we'll have to use smaller needles. Once we have the appropriate gauge we're good to go with our project. It goes without saying that an accurate measurement of our swatch is vital to making the correct adjustments. It's equally important to ensure we're using the correct needle sizes. We might not always be familiar with the size designations on needles or hooks or maybe they're not visible. How do we know what the true size is? We have a gauge for that too. In fact, Clover has designed a tool that both measures our gauge accurately as well as determines exact knitting needle and crochet hook sizes.


What does it do?

Swatch Ruler
It's so important to anything we do in knitting or crochet that we have an accurate measurement of both stitch gauge and row gauge. Once we have our knitted or crocheted swatch we need to measure stitches and rows across four inches to get a good average. Proper adjustments rely on this accuracy. Clover's four-inch square swatch ruler allows us to lay the ruler on our fabric and count both stitches and rows ensuring that accuracy and without ever moving the gauge. We don't want to measure rows in one place and stitches in another.


Knitting Needle and Crochet Hook GaugeUsing the correct size knitting needle or crochet hook is essential to achieving our creative intent. Why do we need to measure them? Two reasons. First, we now live in a small global community. Knitting and crochet patterns are available worldwide and the size designations on them might not be familiar to us. The knitting needle and crochet hook gauge shows all sizes in US, European (metric) and Japanese sizes making conversion easy. We'll always have the right size. Secondly, we might not always have sizes marked on our needles or hooks. Some get old and are worn, some we get from family, friends or even more obscure sources and we just can't find the size. Now we can measure. Takes all of the mystery out of needle or hook selection.


How do I share it?

Clover's Snag Repair Needles are designed for the detail side of snag repair or finishing stitches off cleanly. Two sizes of needles are provided. The thicker size is ideal for loosely woven or knit fabrics. The finer size is perfect for densely woven or finer fabrics. Each needle sports a fine ball point that allows us to manipulate our fabric without having to worry about splitting fibers. This is especially important when repairing snags on fine fabrics. Additionally, Snag Repair Needles are the new "go to" tool for hiding loose thread ends associated with machine quilting, embroidery, punch needle, needlepoint, Sashico or tapestries. Here's how it works.

Snags - Unsightly snags ruin the feel of anything. But we can repair them to our satisfaction. Simply select the snag repair needle size for the fabric being repaired. Remember, always use the finest needle possible. Insert the point into the exact spot from where our errant thread was pulled. Attach those loose fibers or threads to the "grippy" edges on the end of the needle by wrapping them around the shaft while simultaneously twisting the needle. Once the connection is made, just pull the needle with the attached fibers through the fabric to the wrong side and remove the needle. Problem solved.

Loose Thread Ends - Machine quilting, for example, leaves us with loose ends to deal with. Top thread and bobbin thread ends. The first step in the hiding process is to get both threads on the same side of the quilt. Simply pull the top thread upwards which reveals a bobbin thread loop. Use the point of the needle to pull the now exposed bobbin thread loop through to the top of the quilt. Tie the two threads together with an overhand knot. Now insert the Snag Repair Needle into the fabric where the bobbin thread came through. Move it horizontally between the quilt layers for about an inch and then back through the quilt top. Always check to make sure your needle didn't exit the back of the quilt at any point. Remember, we want to hide the thread ends between quilt layers. Now attach the loose thread in the same manner you would for a snag repair and pull it through the quilt to the exit point on the top fabric. Clip the thread close to the top fabric and the loose end will pull back inside the quilt and out of sight forever. The same technique can be used when we run out of bobbin thread. Just hide the ends as described, insert a full bobbin and continue stitching. Seamless stops and starts. This general principle applies to everything we do in creative fiber arts that leaves us with loose ends to deal with.

Harvest House Quilting is owned and operated by Colleen Plucinski, with the constant support of her husband, John, who has assisted in selecting and carrying more bolts of fabric over the years than most could imagine; and John cuts more than 95% of the fabric for shoppers, kits and bundles. Now we just need to get him on our long-arm machine, Sally... we're still working on it!

Colleen has had a love of fabric and sewing which started with clothing construction and then home decor. Clothing construction began as a kid. In the early 1970’s a quilt for Colleen and John’s baby daughter, Maurene, turned her interest to quilting. With little available in the way of classes or books Colleen dabbled with self-teaching and much trial and error before she was hooked.

Colleen started teaching in the mid 1980’s to friends and family. Teaching in a former chain fabric store (SoFro Fabrics), local quilt shops and community college adult education programs soon followed. With special requests from students, she soon found herself designing and writing patterns for classes she taught, hence, Harvest House Quilting was born...

Pattern ideas come from inspirations of all types, buildings, landscape, and sometimes a catchy name will “pop” into her head and then the design follows – whatever moves her.

Colleen's special tool, "The Wacker seams perfect" tm, is a great tool for flattening multi-seam layers without clipping, removing stitches, twisting or pressing seams open. Over the years we have been honored with it being written up in quilt magazines; being sold through great names such as Nancy's Notions; and appearing in two books published by Susan Cleveland of Pieces be with You, being distributed through 3 major distributors to quilt and sewing shops (Checker Dist., Brewer Sewing and United Notions.) What an honor to be the one blessed with the creation of this wonderful tool!

Harvest House Quilting’s mission is to produce original designs with easily understandable instructions - simple instructions for simply great quilt projects. Top quality fabrics and select notions are important in any quilt project and will are available through HHQ. Quilt samples and kit preparations are handled by Colleen, John and several great quilters, Judy, Kathy, Suzy and Mary, who we could not do without.

Colleen has belonged to several quilt guilds in the area over the years as there is always something new to learn from the gifted members of each guild. Colleen has started small quilt groups through the years and has been blessed making many treasured friends as a result of quilting, fabric and sewing.

Colleen and John also started a charity,"Quilts of Comforts", out of the needs for quilts and comfort back when hurricane Katrina hit the south..... and over ten years later we still provide quilts and pillowcases to victims of natural disasters in the U.S. We are humbled to be able bring quilts and pillowcases to those in such need after hurricanes, tornados, floods, fires, etc. We are blessed to have wonderful and giving ladies assist with the quilt construction. The need never ends, therefore we are always looking for sewers, cutters, and donations to keep us going! Prayers are always welcome!!

What is it?
Think about what we do when we construct any sewn project. Most likely we take large pieces of fabric and cut them into small pieces of fabric and then we sew them back together into large pieces of fabric again. And it's all done with some creative vision in mind. If we measure, mark, cut, pin, press and sew accurately the result is something that is pleasing to us. If we don't . . . ah well, then not so much. But there's more to consider. More effort and more time required. To put in a hem we have to make all of those measurements and the markings and then make all of the folds and then put in all of the pins to hold the folds we've measured. And then we have to press around the pins and then remove the pins. No question about it, it's a lot of detail work and if we mess it up we're going to be disappointed. There's gotta' be another way. And there is and that's where Clover's Hot Hemmer and Hot Ruler come in. For the first time we have a tandem of sewing tools that lets us accurately measure, mark and press all at the same time and with one tool.


What does it do?
Clover's Hot Hemmer and Hot Ruler will revolutionize the way you do hems, mitered corners and pressed curves. They truly are the "go to" tools for anyone who does hems, mitered corners or pressed curves. Both are made of a nylon based fiber board that does not retain heat when ironed on so no waiting for them to cool and no burned fingers. Another feature of the fiber board is that while it will not stick to your fabric it will not slide either. It merely stays in place while you manipulate your fabric into place for pressing. And best of all both are loaded with useful measuring and angle markings and cutouts. The Hot Hemmer is 6" x 5" with a rounded corner for pressing curves and a square cut out corner for measuring in and over at the same time. The Hot Ruler is 10"x 2 1/2" and is designed for completing longer hems in minimum time. If you're ironing hems for draperies, this is your tool.

The Hot Hemmer and Hot Ruler have many useful applications. Here are a few.

- Measure, fold and iron any hem in one smooth motion. Measure, fold, press. Repeat as necessary for the length or your project. The Hot Ruler with its increased length makes short work of long hems. Both take all of the guess work out of even, consistent hems. No last minute surprises where hem lines do not match up. Pleats anyone? Yes, you can use it to measure, fold and press pleats as well.

- Ever try to make a perfect 45° mitered corner? No problem. Just measure to desired depth at the desired point, fold your fabric along the miter line and press.

- How about pressing a curve, say to make a patch pocket. Again, no problem. Just gather your fabric around the curved portion of the Hot Hemmer and press. Remove excess fabric and attach to your garment.

- The corner cutout of the Hot Hemmer can be used "lefty" or "righty" to measure trim lines or seams. Quick, accurate and no mistakes.

- Saves time - We don't have to measure and mark hems, pin hems, iron around pins and then remove pins. And it's perfect every time so no "do overs".
