What should I know about installing the lift mechanism in a custom made cabinet?
Each cabinet will be different. I can however make a couple of recommendations.

The most important guideline to note is the clearance needed from the inside of the back of the cabinet to the back edge of the sewing machine mount. In the illustration it shows an absolute minimum of 2.5” but I would recommend 3” to be on the safe side. This will ensure the machine mount will travel up and down without interfering with the lift.

When determining where to center the lift with the machine mount note that with sewing machines the bulk of the weight is to the right. On our cabinets with the larger opening we will offset the lift to the right to accommodate the weight of the machine better.

What is the difference between an "electric lift mechanism", and an "air lift platform mechanism"?
The "Electric lift" offers both ways with a switch, no manual effort either way, and the "Air Lift" is manual push down (easy) and pneumatic pressure lift up (automatic).
