(Q) Hi! Right now I have a Babylock Evolve, easy to thread but is cumbersome because of the large foot, and the knives don't raise very high making it difficult to cut thru thick stuff. (like fleece). I am looking for a serger that maneuvers well, and has a strong overhead knife so it CAN cut thru thick layers EASILY. I have heard a lot about Juki sergers, and was looking at the 654, 655 and 734. Any difference in cutting ability between them? Reliability? Any other recommendations on other sergers? Thanks for your help. Alice S.

(A)Alice, Juki overhead knifes do cut thicker compressed fabrics easier than recessed knives which don't lift up as high. It doesn't make any difference which Juki model since they all have the same motor power. We do recommend either the MO655 5 Thread Safety Stitch or MO735 which adds coverhem stitches. Annette is our serger teacher, started with the 655 and now has the 735 which is easier to use. John

Prior Post: My wife Annette Douthat had the Juki MO655 (Now MO735) at home and she is our serger teacher consultant. I am also one of the serger mechanics. The 655 has the wider 5- thread true safety stitch seam for woven fabrics which the White 2000 serger does not have. Both have the 3 or 4 thread mock safety seams which is better for knitted fabrics. The Juki also has an easier built in roll hem with sliding stitch finger on the needle plate, that you do not have to remove like the White. Juki's overhead knife is stronger, will lift higher and will cut more thickness than the recessed knives on the White. Juki makes the 655 with industrial style loopers and needle guards, better reliability, and less service requirement over the life of the machine because of fewer parts and better assembly than the White which is made by Jaguar in China. What is the safety feature on the Juki 655DE?
The safety feature prevents the machine from serging until the doors are closed on the machine.

What types of feet are available?
2/3 thread converter, blind stitch presser foot, beading presser foot, elasticator presser foot, piping presser foot, gathering presser foot, cording presser foot, snap-on/off presser foot replacement.

What is the difference between the Juki 655 and the Juki 655DE?
The Juki 655 and Juki 655DE are one and the same. Even though the box says Juki 655 without the "DE", there is only one version available.

Which is the best type of serger to buy?

It all depends on how you would use a serger.

If you would only overcast single layers to keep them from raveling, a 3 thread serger would do like Juki MO623: http://www.sewingmachinestore.com/products/abp02533.html

If you seam knits, a 4 thread mock safety stitch is best Like Juki 654DE:
http://www.sewingmachinestore.com/products/abp02506.html

If you seam wovens, the best stitch is a 5 thread safety stitch like Juki 655:
http://www.sewingmachinestore.com/products/abp02531.html

All sergers do roll hems and differential feed, so the difference is how many threads you might use.

Some sergers even have the coverhem stitch with 2 or 3 straight stitches on top and a serger stitch on bottom. Juki has the best of all in the new MO735

This serger sews perfect!! I've used a Singer Quantum Lock for the past 18 years and decided to try this Juki. I am certainly glad I did!!! It is heavy duty, which is what I need for fabrics I sew. The price was very reasonable considering all the extras that came with it!! Thank you very much!!

I originally ordered a Brother serger, which arrived broken. Dolores Wheat helped me return it, allowed me to have it applied towards another purchase as a credit even though the product said 'no returns', and I received the Juki serger I bought afterwards just last week. It works flawlessly. Thank you for making a stressful situation work out in the end!

I've never had a serger before, and I'm very excited about my new purchase. It came quickly. Thank you!

This was my first internet sewing machine purchase. I never thought of purchasing a sewing machine on line but the more I read your website the more comfortable I was to purchase on line. Added your website to my sewing favorites.

Everything about this transaction was top-notch! The product rating that compared the model I thought I needed with the model I actually purchased was extremely valuable. Since my husband is a Service Technician, I really do value the opinion of the folks in the repair department. You know first hand which models are truly reliable, and which ones sit on you tables, waiting for repairs day in and day out. So Thank you, John, for comparing and sharing (the White v/s the Juki). I'm still learning how to thread this 5-spool :0), but I feel confident it will soon become just as second-nature to me as it was for my older "Plain Jane" 3-spool Husqvarna. Thank you for excellent service, excellent products, and fair prices! I will definitely shop with you again. Take care,

My local sewing store recently went out of business so i am very happy to have a source where I can get machines fast and at a reasonable price. I have bought from you before and will continue to. Thanks so very much!
