Angie, Both the Janome 131HDL and AlphaSew 221 Featherweight are made in China, where all straight stitch basic all metal mechanical sewing machines are now made. The Janome is a full size, full power 25 pounds vs 12 pounds for the 1/2 size Alphasew 221. Janome has a drop feed lever for darning and free motion quilting or embroidery vs no drop feed control on AlphaSew or Singer 221, only a feed dog cover plate which restricts the amount of fabric you can get under the foot. Janome with handcrank and optional motor will fit in any flatbed cabinet, portable case or treadle stand. AlphaSew is just portable. There are no cabinets available now for the Alphasew which is a replica of Singer 221 Featherweight. There is no good reason for the difference in price, other than used Singer Featherweights are hard to find for, hence the higher price for the replica. Hope this helps. John, Owner & Tech.

I am a fan of these heavy little Alphasew machines. Despite the sort of funky instruction booklet that doesn't quite match the machines, I do like my Alphasew machines for what I do - deerskin products, usually not more than 3 layers. These tough simple machines are real workhorses. As long as I keep them oiled up they work really well.

I believe the machine is a good attempt to replicate the Singer 221 Portable, and it appears to be a reasonably stout machine, reminiscent of the "best portable ever made" albeit a little rough around the edges. It appears to be quite functional and darn "cute" when set up for use. Nice to know that you can still get a "tough as nails" machine built to the old, reliable and practical designs.
