Frequently Asked Questions

Top

How do I get a straight stitch?
Set your stitch width knob (located on top of the machine with the red numbers) on zero (0). The stitch selector knob (located on the front of the machine with letter A-L on outer knob) should be on A and the inner knob (N or S) set on N. Your stitch length dial (located by your reverse lever on front of machine) should be on 2 or 3. This will set your machine to a straight stitch.

My thread keeps knotting up under the fabric, is getting tangled in the bobbin area, or the thread keeps breaking.
Check that your machine is threaded correctly and you have followed all the thread guides. To thread your machine, refer to PAGE 4 of your "Let's Get Started Guide" (the red/white booklet) included to assist you with the instructions below:

- Make sure that the thread is in the FIRST thread guide correctly by sliding the thread under the guide (on top of the machine towards the left and looks like a hook) then bringing it up over the guide from the front, so it rests UNDER the tension spring (the small piece of metal with the small rectangular hole, being held with a screw). The thread does NOT go through the hole, but BETWEEN the two pieces of metal. (See Illustration C)

- Make sure your thread tension is set between 3 and 5. (Begin with 3 and adjust accordingly.) Bring your thread down through the tension disc.

- Make sure your bobbin is in properly... (this is important) Take out your bobbin casing with the bobbin still in it. (Do NOT move the black levers that is holding in the surrounding "shuttle race" ring, etc. that is around the bobbin casing). Hold your bobbin casing in your hand. Turn the bobbin casing toward you so that the bobbin is facing toward you. Pull the bobbin thread. If (when pulling the thread) your bobbin turns to the LEFT in a counter-clockwise motion, it is INCORRECT. When the bobbin thread is pulled, the bobbin should turn to the RIGHT in a CLOCKWISE motion. This is on PAGE 2 of your "Let's Get Started Guide".

- Check your needle. You may need to insert a new one. Sometimes a needle is bent, and you cannot see the "bend" but it will keep the needle from picking up your bobbin thread correctly, thus creating the "nesting" effect.

- Make sure your stitch length is set correctly for the material you are using. If stitch length is set to zero (0), your feed dogs will not feed the fabric, creating a "nest".

- Make sure your PRESSURE foot lever (a "brass colored" lever found on the inside door where your bulb is) is set on about 2. (the "hole" of the lever is what should be on the number 2) If it is set on 3, it could be too much pressure on your material, thus creating the "nesting". If it is set on 1 or 0, it may not be enough pressure. "2" is normal.

- If your thread is "catching" as you remove your material, it is because it may have stopped while the bobbin was half turned. As you GENTLY pull your fabric away, just turn the hand wheel a little bit towards you at the same time. It should turn the bobbin and release your thread from the bobbin case.

How do I use my buttonhole foot?
- Set your stitch LENGTH (located on front of machine by reverse lever) on the "bottom" of the yellow mark just above the "1."
- Set the stich WIDTH at 5.
- Follow the instructions below:
1. Holding the presser foot in your hand, notice that there is a white "sleigh" (the white plastic part that slides back and forth) and there is also a small black "bridge" with a screw in the middle. Your actual presser foot will not move when you are sewing, it's the SLEIGH part of the foot that moves.
2. At one end of the foot, there are three little plastic prongs jutting out. The foot attaches on the machine so those prongs are toward you.
3. To size your button, slide the sleigh all the way to the back until it is up against the back part. Lay your button against the two "posts" sticking up from the sleigh. (See Illustration B)
4. Slide the black bridge up against the other side of your button (you may need to loosen the screw a little on the bridge). Then in position, tighten the screw of the bridge to hold it in place. (See Illustration B) Remove your button.
5. Now, slide the sleigh part of the foot up against the black bridge until the two white posts of the bridge are against the black bridge. (See Illustration A)
6. With the sleigh up against the black bridge and the three prongs on the end of the buttonhole foot facing you, snap the buttonhole foot onto your machine. (if the sleigh slides as you are attaching it, just realign it after snapping it on).

- **TIP: Use a stabilizer product behind your material when sewing to give your buttonhole stability and to keep it from stretching out of shape with use.

- Follow the steps of the diagram on the right hand side of your machine showing the buttonhole foot.
- To begin sewing your button hole:
1. With the white sleigh up against the black bridge of the foot, and making sure your stitch width is on 5 and your stitch length on the bottom of the yellow mark (near the 1), set your selector knob on "J" and the inner knob on "N".
(Remember the sleigh travels backward on the material, so measure for the buttonhole based on that). Your sleigh will travel backward.
2. When the sleigh reaches the BACK of the buttonhole foot and touches it, you MUST remove your foot from the control pedal to stop.
3. Lift your needle, then switch to letter K and take 3-4 stitches for your bar tack.
4. Lift the needle. Switch to letter L The sleigh will begin to travel forward. (NOTE: If your sleigh stops about halfway and only sews in one spot, you may have the black bridge tightened down to tight. Loosen it just a little so the sleigh "feet" can travel under it.)
5. When the "posts" of the sleigh meet against the black bridge (the starting position again), remove your foot from the control pedal to stop.
6. Lift the needle. Put the selector knob on letter K again and take 3-4 stitches for your final bar tack.
7. Lift your needle. Your buttonhole is finished.

- That's it! Remember it takes practice to make perfect buttonholes, so it's best to use scrap material first before starting your project.
- Once your serger is threaded, be sure to slide all four threads under the back of the presser foot, lower the foot and begin to serge making sure a thread chain is forming.
