Spring Break Kids Begin to Sew
Mon, Mar 12, 10:00 AM - 01:00 PM
San Antonio Loop 1604
Class size limited to 8 students ages 9-11. Class fee $99.99 plus $20.00 kit fee. This is a Begin to Sew class for students who have never used a sewing machine before. This is a 4 day class and the following is a description of all 4 days. Introduction to the machine – parts and what they do, turn machine on/off, plugging in the machine, threading, filling bobbin, changing needle, stitch forward, reverse stitch. Students will stitch on paper drawings to get the feel of stitching a straight line, pivoting at corners, sewing in a circle. They will stitch on fabric scraps to get the feel of using the seam guide or presser foot to stitch straight seams. Straight Seam Project, Pivoting at Corners – students will make a pin cushion (or doll pillow). The project is a 6” square (kit assembled by store and part of fee charged for needed materials for the class). The goal is to give the student experience with a real project using the sewing machine: sewing skills, planning project, assembling fabric pieces, concept of sewing fabrics wrong side out and turning project to right side when seams are complete, working square corners to obtain right angles, stuffing the pin cushion (doll pillow) and finishing raw edges to complete the project. Making a Pillowcase – This is an easy and fun project for the students – a simple concept they will use over and over again to make pillowcases for themselves, siblings, family members, friends, etc. (Experience has shown that almost half of the students will buy fabric following the class to make another pillowcase at home). We will make a standard pillowcase to avoid the store having to buy travel size pillows needed in the past. The goal is to give the students the experience of sewing several pieces of different sizes into one integrated project. Again, they will be pivoting at corners, sewing wrong sides together and turning the project right side out for completion, pressing seams as they go to ensure a more professional project, practicing straight ½” seams. (Kit will be furnished by the store and price included in the overall kit fee) Personalized Tote Bag – Needless to say, this is everyone’s favorite project. Not only the students, but their parents are always amazed and delighted at how adorable this project is upon completion. This is a small 12” square lined tote bag, with shoulder strap and embroidered initial on the outside pocket. Students will choose their own fabrics from the assortment on display outside the classroom. They will learn how to measure, cut and prepare their chosen fabrics for the project. They will make a lining for their bag, make a stitched and turned strap for their bag, measure and cut their pocket and then, with the help of staff, choose the font they wish and experience an embroidery machine stitching that initial for them, sew the pocket on the outside of their bag, assemble all the parts for their finished project.
