Juki Pearl MO654DE has automatic self-threading lower looper, adaptor for converting to 2 thread for finer roll hems/flatlock stitching/decorative stitching, and the safety feature of machine not being able to run the machine unless all the doors are closed. So, fingers can't be in the loopers underneath. Otherwise same as Juki 644D which is without the above features. The Juki MO-654DE Overlock/Serger is essentially the same machine as the new Bernina 800DL with lay in tensions and lower looper threader and older Bernette Funlock 007D and 004D all made by Juki in the same factories as the Juki MO600 Series. We prefer the round tension knobs on the Juki brand because they are closer to the needles and loopers, and threads stay in tension longer on the round knobs. Juki is the world's largest manufacturor of industrial sewing machines and sergers. They make Juki and Bernina sergers as well as Singer's top of the line computer sewing and embroidery machines from the XL5000 down.
Re: I'm trying to determine the pros/cons to dial tension vs. lay in tension (MO654DE vs MO734DE). Can you advise the pros/cons to each, and any other differences between the two machines? Cindy

Cindy, Lay in tension dials on Juki MO734DE, M0735DE, and New MO1000 Jet Air Sergers are easier to see and thread and easier to pull each thread through since the tension discs release when the presser foot lever is lifted. Juki MO654DE traditional round tension knobs do not have tension disc release when presser foot is lifted, so it is harder the get the thread all the way down between the tension discs and harder to pull each thread through when re-threading or tying off new thread spools to pull through the thread paths. No other major feature differences, other than in extended warranties and the automatic needle threaders on Juki MO735DE and on new Juki MO1000 Jet Air Looper Threading serger. John Douthat, AllBrands Owner & Tech

What is the safety feature on the Juki 654DE?
The safety feature prevents the machine from serging until the doors are closed on the machine.

What types of feet are available?
2/3 thread converter, blind stitch presser foot, beading presser foot, elasticator presser foot, piping presser foot, gathering presser foot, cording presser foot, snap-on/off presser foot replacement.

Where is the Juki 654 serger made?
They are made in Shanghai

Which is the best type of serger to buy?
It all depends on how you would use a serger.

If you would only overcast single layers to keep them from raveling, a 3 thread serger would do like Juki MO623: http://www.sewingmachinestore.com/products/abp02533.html

If you seam knits, a 4 thread mock safety stitch is best Like Juki 654DE:
http://www.sewingmachinestore.com/products/abp02506.html

If you seam wovens, the best stitch is a 5 thread safety stitch like Juki 655:
http://www.sewingmachinestore.com/products/abp02531.html

All sergers do roll hems and differential feed, so the difference is how many threads you might use.

Some sergers even have the coverhem stitch with 2 or 3 straight stitches on top and a serger stitch on bottom. Juki has the best of all in the new MO735.

I recently purchased a Juki Lock MO-654DE serger, which by the way I absolutely love, but I have alot of chair sashes to serge for a wedding (180) and I was thinking I should order a replacement knife for it to have on hand. I don't see where I could order another one, or if I even need to. Also in the video it shows an accessory that is a plastic plate that has measurements that you could get to go with your serger, and I was wondering where I might order one. Thank you. Barbara S.
Barbara, there should be an extra Juki fixed lower knife blade in your accessories bag. The Juki upper movable knife is carbide tipped and should not need changing unless it runs over a straight pin and gets a burr on the cutting edge. The plastic plate insert is for chain stitching on 5 thread Juki MO655, which your machine does not have. John
