The Free-Motion Mastery in a Month system draws on my 25 years experience as a piano teacher to bring you the simplest, most effective method ever for learning or improving free-motion quilting skills.

The FMM30 system combines four teaching elements: Movement, Tracing, Drawing and Quilting.

Begin with Quilting Yoga, then trace designs with the Master Trainer and Tracing Sheets to build muscle memory before you go to the sewing machine. Next, draw the same designs in a sketchbook to train your "mental map". Finally, quilt one block a day to bring together all these skills for successful quilting in record time!

Learning to quilt is not just about learning patterns: you also need to learn the movement of quilting. FMM30 uses large-body motions and tracing with the Master Trainer and Tracing Sheets -- before you go to the sewing machine -- to teach you patterns AND the movement to quilt them. The Master Trainer is actually four tools in one. In addition to using it for the muscle-memory building tracing exercises, use it for:

Joining Strips & Binding: Use the guide lines to cut strips & binding for assembling your practice blocks “quilt-as-you-go” style into a completed quilt.
All-Purpose Ruler: Measure anything with the ruler on the straight edge.
Quilting Ruler: Use different sides to quilt a variety of shapes. The straight edge does straight lines, the C-curve end does small curved grids and block outlines, the S-curve end does wavy lines and the bumpy bottom does clamshells, circles, rick-rack and more. Instructions are in the book and the video class. The ruler is 1/4" thick, which is standard for most ruler work feet.

When you're ready to assemble your FMM30 quilt, the first step is to square up your blocks to 10" x 10" (or 10" x 11" if you want to squeeze the max out of your block). Then, cut them into pieces and reassemble them with joining strips to create your design. (I call the process "Quilt First, Piece After.")

The Free-Motion Mastery in a Month 10" x 11" Square-up Ruler is specially designed to:

Square up your blocks to any size between 8"x 8" and 10" x 11"
Perfectly center panel blocks and diagonals - holes at center points let you put a pin or mechanic pencil point through the ruler
Cut the blocks into halves, thirds, and quarters
Cut the blocks into 1/4-square triangles, 1/2-square triangles, or centered triangles
Cut the joining strips to assemble the pieces
Cut the binding to finish your quilt

It is designed to work equally well for left-handed or right-handed cutting.
