  • Use on high shank machines
  • Allows the use of certain snap-on presser feet

When installing a new shank or snap-on foot, turn the handwheel by hand to ensure that the needle clears the opening in the foot. In some cases, an authorized technician may file the opening slightly to provide adequate clearance for the needle.

A sewing machine shank is the metal arm that holds the presser foot. The main differences between shank types are their height, angle, and compatibility with presser feet. Measuring from the center of the presser foot thumb screw down to the needle plate (with the foot down) determines the specific shank type.

Low Shank Measurement: About 1/2 inch (12 mm) from the screw to the needle plate.
Usage: Standard on most modern home and beginner sewing machines.
Details: Most general-purpose, affordable, and snap-on presser feet are designed for low shanks.

High Shank Measurement: About 1 inch (25 mm) or more from the screw to the needle plate.Usage: Common on heavy-duty, semi-professional, and industrial machines, as well as high-end quilting models.Details: Provides more clearance under the foot for thick materials and specialized ruler work.

Slant Shank Measurement: About 3/4 inch with an obvious forward slant.Usage: Found almost exclusively on vintage Singer machines.Details: The needle enters at an angle, requiring specialized slant-shank feet.

Specialty Systems (Bernina & Pfaff)Measurement: Proprietary designs unique to the brand.Usage: Used by brands like Bernina and some Pfaff models.Details: Require brand-specific adapters or specialized clip-on feet that do not interchange with standard low or high shank accessories.
